The Other House....

Some of you know about the House in Cut Off Saga. (Yes, there really is a town called Cut Off, LA!) A quick rundown is that Clint inherited the house from his Mom. With out going into a novel, the house has been tied up with IRS liens from a business Clint's uncle had 20+ years back. It's confusing and I'm not even sure I understand how that came to be. Basically, we are unable to sell it. It hasn't been livable for many, many years. Clint has a lawyer who has been working on it bit by bit over the past ten years trying to get the title cleared. It's just not happening.

Well.... about a month ago we got a notice from Lafourche Parish that the house had been condemned. We needed to have it torn down, or the parish would do it and send us the very expensive bill. Of course, it's a no brainer that it would be cheaper to find someone to do it ourselves!!

In trying to outsmart the system, we came up with the idea to find someone to tear it down for free in exchange for the materials. It took a while, but bingo! We found someone interested. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to use much of the house. There are so many nails and such, that it wasn't worth the trouble of trying to take every board apart. They basically took the window sills, some doors, ceiling tile, and piled the rest of the house on the lot.

So now we're left with all the trash and disposal.

Clint contacted a guy he had heard about. Turns out Lafourche Parish had gotten a bid from him initially to tear down the house, so he knew all about it. Had pictures and everything. Clint told him the house was down, and it just needed to be hauled off.

He called today with his price. $9,600. Which he said was $1,000 less than his bid to the parish. WTF?? Seriously???

Clint is checking with someone else.... but they are saying about $6,000.

It is making me sick to think that we will have to dish out that kind of cash for nothing. It's not an investment. It's not even paying down on our own house. It's to be thrown away. Nearly ten thousand dollars.

We have no choice either.

I want to cry.

I need a drink. Seriously.

Unfortunately, they scalp us when it comes to disasters. Funny how they won't let you own the house, but you can own the bill! My grandfather's house is still standing and we looked into having it town down. 6,000+ I guess we will rent the dumpster and do it ourselves. I do not look forward to that day. I feel for you. I really do.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this! So ridiculous! Not sure if you're coming on Saturday night, but if you are, I'll buy you a drink! :)

If the land is not worth more than what is owed the IRS and the cost to haul off the mess, you should be able to do a Quit Claim.

Oh I know Cut Off. That is where all my mom's side of the family is from. I even lived there until I was three.
